The Short Answer
If you are reroofing a home in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Coeur d'Alene, or anywhere across North Idaho, architectural (dimensional) shingles are usually the better long-term choice for our climate. They handle wind, snow load, freeze-thaw cycling, and ice dams better than the older 3-tab style, and the price gap has narrowed considerably over the years.
That said, 3-tab shingles are not obsolete. There are specific situations, budget-driven reroofs, detached structures, or matching an existing roof, where they still make sense. The goal of this article is to give you the honest tradeoffs so you can decide with confidence rather than guesswork.
What Actually Makes Them Different
Both products are asphalt shingles built on a fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and surfaced with mineral granules. The difference is how they are constructed.
3-tab shingles are a single, flat layer cut into three uniform tabs. They lie almost perfectly flat, which is why an older 3-tab roof has that smooth, uniform, slightly repetitive look. They are lighter and thinner.
Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminate shingles) bond two or more layers together. That extra layer creates depth, shadow lines, and a heavier, more textured surface that many people think resembles cedar shake or slate. The lamination also means more asphalt and more material per square foot, which is the root of nearly every performance difference below.
Lifespan and Warranty
This is where the gap is widest. In real-world Inland Northwest conditions:
- 3-tab shingles typically carry a 20-25 year rating and often deliver closer to 15-20 years of true service life here once snow, UV, and temperature swings take their toll.
- Architectural shingles are commonly rated 30 years to lifetime-limited, with many roofs realistically lasting 25-30+ years when properly installed and ventilated.
Manufacturer warranties tell the same story. The strongest coverage, including GAF's Golden Pledge warranty (up to 25 or 50 years depending on system), is built around architectural shingle systems installed by certified contractors. As a GAF Master Elite contractor, a designation held by only a small percentage of roofers nationwide, DG Contracting can register that enhanced coverage, which is not available on a basic 3-tab installation.
Wind, Snow, and Ice: The Inland Northwest Stress Test
Our roofs do not have an easy life. Heavy snow loads, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, ice dams along the eaves, and wind events from the Palouse and the Idaho panhandle all attack the roof differently.
- Wind resistance: 3-tab shingles are commonly rated around 60 mph, while quality architectural shingles are rated up to 110-130 mph. The heavier, layered design and stronger sealant strips simply hold down better in a windstorm.
- Snow and freeze-thaw: The thicker mat and extra asphalt of architectural shingles resist cracking and granule loss better as temperatures swing above and below freezing, sometimes within a single day here.
- Ice dams: Neither shingle stops ice dams on its own. That is a job for proper attic ventilation, insulation, and ice-and-water shield underlayment at the eaves. But a more robust shingle is more forgiving when meltwater backs up.
For homeowners worried about extreme weather, it is also worth comparing against metal roofing, which sheds snow aggressively and lasts even longer, though at a higher upfront cost.
Cost Comparison
3-tab is the cheaper material, but the savings are smaller than most people expect. The shingles themselves are only one line item. Labor, tear-off, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, and disposal are largely the same regardless of which shingle goes on.
As a realistic industry range, architectural shingles often run roughly 15-30% more than 3-tab on a total installed basis, not double. When you spread that modest premium across an extra decade or more of service life, architectural shingles frequently cost less per year of protection. They can also help at resale, since buyers and appraisers tend to view a dimensional roof more favorably.
Every home is different, so the only way to know your real numbers is an on-site evaluation. DG Contracting offers free estimates with no pressure, including a clear breakdown of both options if you want to compare.
Curb Appeal and Resale
Looks are subjective, but the market has a clear preference. Architectural shingles create dimension and shadow that read as higher-end from the street and pair well with most home styles common around Spokane and Coeur d'Alene. The flat, uniform look of 3-tab can make a home read as dated or as a budget build.
If you plan to sell within the next several years, a dimensional roof is an easier story to tell a buyer, and it photographs better in listings. For a home you intend to keep for decades, the better durability is reason enough on its own.
When 3-Tab Still Makes Sense
3-tab is not a mistake in every scenario. It can be the right call when:
- You are roofing a detached garage, shop, or shed where longevity and appearance matter less.
- You are matching an existing 3-tab roof on an addition and want a seamless blend.
- You have a tight, immovable budget and need a sound, code-compliant roof now, with the understanding it will be replaced sooner.
- The structure is one you plan to sell or demolish in the near term.
An honest roofer will tell you when the cheaper option is genuinely fine, and when spending a little more will save you money over the life of the roof.
Our Recommendation for Local Homeowners
For a primary residence in the Inland Northwest, the combination of snow, wind, freeze-thaw, and ice dams makes architectural shingles the choice we recommend in the large majority of cases. The durability, warranty coverage, wind rating, and resale value usually outweigh a relatively small upfront premium.
DG Contracting has been a family-owned, licensed and insured roofer serving Washington and Idaho since 2013, backing our work with a 15-25 year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer coverage. If a full roof replacement is on your horizon, we are happy to walk your roof, explain your options in plain language, and include a 15-25 year workmanship warranty with a qualifying replacement. Flexible financing is available if you want to spread the investment out.
