What a "cool roof" actually means
A cool roof is any roof designed to reflect more sunlight and release absorbed heat faster than a standard dark roof. Two numbers describe how it performs: solar reflectance (how much sunlight bounces off instead of turning into heat) and thermal emittance (how quickly the surface sheds the heat it does absorb). A dark asphalt shingle might reflect well under 10% of the sun hitting it on a July afternoon, while a light or specially coated surface can reflect 25% or more.
For homeowners in Spokane, Spokane Valley, and across North Idaho, the practical question is simpler: on a 95-degree day, how hot does your roof and attic get, and how much of that heat ends up in your living space? A cooler roof surface means a cooler attic, which means your air conditioning works less to keep the house comfortable.
Does the Inland Northwest get hot enough to matter?
It is easy to think of cool roofs as a Phoenix or Las Vegas concern. But Eastern Washington and North Idaho summers are genuinely hot and dry, with long stretches in the 90s and triple-digit days that are no longer rare. The high-elevation sun is intense, and many local homes were built with limited attic insulation and modest ventilation.
On a sunny afternoon, the surface of a dark roof here can climb well above 150 degrees Fahrenheit, while a reflective surface might sit 40 to 60 degrees cooler. That difference shows up as a cooler attic, less strain on your AC, and more comfortable upstairs bedrooms. For a region where homes are increasingly running cooling they were never originally designed for, that is a meaningful comfort gain.
The catch: we also have brutal winters
Here is where national cool-roof advice breaks down for our climate. The Inland Northwest is heating-dominated, not cooling-dominated. We run furnaces far more hours per year than air conditioners, and we deal with heavy snow, freeze-thaw cycles, ice dams, wind, and hail.
A roof optimized purely to reflect summer sun could, in theory, mean a slightly colder roof in winter and a marginally higher heating bill. In practice, this trade-off is small and often overstated, because winter sun is weak and low in the sky and the roof is frequently snow-covered anyway. The bigger point is that any roofing choice you make here has to survive winter first. Reflectivity is a bonus, not the primary design goal.
Color, shingles, and what the rating labels mean
You do not have to choose a white roof to get some cool-roof benefit. Many manufacturers now make solar-reflective asphalt shingles in normal-looking colors using reflective granules. They will never match a white membrane for reflectance, but a lighter or reflective-rated shingle can still meaningfully reduce attic heat compared to a standard dark shingle, while still looking right on a Spokane or Coeur d'Alene home.

Metal roofing and reflectance
Metal roofing is one of the strongest cool-roof options for our region, and it happens to pair beautifully with heavy snow. Metal sheds snow readily, resists ice-dam damage, and lasts for decades. With a reflective or light-colored coating, a standing-seam or metal panel roof can deliver high solar reflectance while still standing up to freeze-thaw and wind.
Bare or dark metal does not automatically reflect well, so the coating matters. A factory-applied cool-rated finish is what gives you both the summer reflectance and the long-term color retention. For homeowners thinking long-term, metal is often the option that solves both the summer-heat and winter-durability sides of the equation at once.
Ventilation and insulation matter more than color
Honest advice: for most local homes, attic ventilation and insulation will do more for summer comfort and energy bills than roof color alone. A reflective roof over a poorly vented, under-insulated attic still traps heat. A balanced intake-and-exhaust ventilation system lets hot air escape, while adequate attic insulation keeps that heat out of your living space year-round, helping in both July heat and January cold.
This is also your front-line defense against ice dams in winter. Proper ventilation keeps the roof deck cold and even, preventing the melt-refreeze cycle that drives water under your shingles. So the smart move is to treat reflectivity, ventilation, and insulation as one system rather than chasing a single number.

Is a cool roof worth it for your home?
A cool roof tends to pay off most if your home runs AC heavily in summer, has upstairs rooms that overheat, has a large unshaded roof, or has an older under-insulated attic. It matters less if your home is heavily shaded by mature trees, rarely uses cooling, or already has excellent insulation and ventilation.
For the Inland Northwest, the realistic strategy is rarely a stark white roof. It is usually a reflective-rated shingle or a coated metal roof, combined with proper ventilation and insulation, all chosen to survive winter first and reflect summer heat second. Energy savings from reflectivity alone are typically modest here, often a few percent of cooling costs, but combined with ventilation and insulation upgrades the comfort difference can be significant.
