What Roof Pitch Actually Means
Roof pitch is simply how steep your roof is. Contractors write it as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, almost always measured over 12 inches of run. A roof that climbs 6 inches for every 12 inches it travels horizontally is a 6/12 pitch (sometimes written 6:12). A 4/12 is gentler; a 12/12 rises at a dramatic 45-degree angle.
You'll hear the terms pitch and slope used interchangeably in everyday conversation. Technically slope is the rise-over-run ratio and pitch is rise over the full span, but for practical purposes most roofers and homeowners mean the same thing: how steep is it?
That single number quietly drives a surprising amount of your roof's behavior, cost, and lifespan, especially here in the Inland Northwest where snow load and freeze-thaw cycles are part of life.
The Pitch Categories You Should Know
Roofs generally fall into a few broad buckets, and each behaves differently:
- Flat or low-slope (roughly 0/12 to 2/12): Common on modern, commercial, and some additions. These cannot use standard shingles and rely on membrane systems.
- Conventional or moderate slope (3/12 to 7/12): The most common range for homes in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene. Shingles, metal, and most materials work well here.
- Steep slope (8/12 and up): Sheds snow and water fast, looks dramatic, and is excellent for snow country, but costs more to work on safely.
Knowing roughly which category your home falls into helps you understand your material options and why a quote for your neighbor's house may not match yours.
How to Measure Your Roof Pitch
You don't need to climb on the roof. The safest method uses a level and a tape measure from inside the attic or against a gable end:
- Hold a 12-inch level horizontally against a rafter, bubble centered.
- At the 12-inch mark on the level, measure straight down to the rafter.
- That vertical measurement is your rise. If it reads 5 inches, you have a 5/12 pitch.
There are also smartphone apps and pitch gauges that estimate slope from a photo or by resting against the roof edge. They're handy for a ballpark figure, but for anything that affects a real project, let a pro confirm it. Why Pitch Matters So Much in Snow Country
Spokane, Spokane Valley, and North Idaho see heavy snow, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and the ice dams that come with them. Pitch is one of your biggest defenses.
Steeper roofs shed snow and water faster. Less standing moisture means fewer chances for water to back up under shingles or refreeze along the eaves. A steep roof also gives ice dams less flat surface to grip.
Low-slope roofs hold snow longer. That isn't automatically bad, but it raises the stakes on waterproofing, drainage, and snow-load capacity. The deep snow we get some winters puts real weight on a roof, and a low pitch with poor underlayment is where leaks tend to start.
Regardless of pitch, proper ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, good attic ventilation, and insulation all work together to fight the ice dams that plague our region.
Pitch Decides Which Materials You Can Use
This is where pitch gets very practical. Materials have minimum slope requirements set by manufacturers, and ignoring them voids warranties and invites leaks.
- Asphalt shingles: Generally rated for 2/12 and steeper, with special low-slope installation methods (extra underlayment) required below 4/12. The vast majority of local homes are well-suited to quality architectural shingles.
- Standing-seam metal: Performs across a wide range and can go quite low, often down to around 1/12 to 3/12 depending on the panel and seam type. Its slick surface and snow-shedding ability make metal roofing a favorite in deep-snow areas.
- Membrane systems (TPO, modified bitumen): The go-to for flat and very low-slope sections that shingles can't handle.
If your home mixes a steep main roof with a low-slope porch or addition, you may genuinely need two different systems. A good contractor will spot that and price it correctly the first time.
How Pitch Affects Cost and Labor
Two roofs with the same square footage can cost meaningfully different amounts, and pitch is a major reason. A steeper roof means:
- More actual surface area. A 12/12 roof has noticeably more material to cover than a 4/12 over the same footprint, so material and labor both rise.
- Slower, safer work. Crews need staging, harnesses, roof jacks, and more time on steep pitches. That added labor and safety equipment shows up in the price.
- Tear-off complexity. Hauling old material off a steep roof is harder than off a walkable one.
None of this should scare you, it's just useful context for understanding a quote. When you compare estimates for a roof replacement, a low number that ignores your pitch is often a red flag. Honest pricing reflects the real difficulty of your specific roof.
