Why Attic Ventilation Matters Here
Most homeowners think of a roof as just shingles and underlayment. But the attic underneath is part of the system, and how it breathes has a direct effect on how long your roof lasts. In the Inland Northwest, ventilation is not a nicety. It is one of the main defenses against the two problems our climate throws at roofs: ice dams in winter and baked-out shingles in summer.
A properly ventilated attic stays close to the outdoor temperature. In winter, that keeps the roof deck cold so snow melts evenly instead of refreezing at the eaves and forming ice dams. In summer, it flushes out the superheated air that can climb past 140°F in a sealed attic, cooking shingles from below and driving up cooling bills. Poor ventilation also traps moisture, which leads to mold, rotted sheathing, and rusted fasteners.
The goal is simple to state and easy to get wrong: air should enter low and exit high, in roughly equal amounts, moving continuously. The vent types below are just different ways of accomplishing that.
The Two Halves: Intake and Exhaust
Before naming individual vents, it helps to understand that every attic needs two kinds of openings working together:
- Intake vents sit low, usually in the soffits (the underside of the roof overhang). Cool outside air enters here.
- Exhaust vents sit high, near or at the ridge. Warm, moist air rises and escapes here.
This creates a natural convection loop called the stack effect. As warm air leaves the top, it pulls fresh air in at the bottom. No electricity required. The single most common ventilation mistake we see on older Spokane homes is plenty of exhaust but almost no intake, or vice versa. When the two are unbalanced, the system either stalls or starts pulling air from the wrong places, including from inside your living space.
Soffit Vents (Intake)
Soffit vents are the workhorse intake for most homes. They are installed in the eave overhangs and come as continuous perforated strips or individual rectangular vents spaced along the soffit. Continuous soffit venting generally gives the most even airflow.
The catch is that soffit vents only work if air can actually reach the ridge. Two things commonly block them: attic insulation pushed into the eaves, and a lack of baffles. We install rigid baffles (also called insulation chutes) to hold insulation back and keep a clear channel from the soffit up the underside of the roof deck. If you have ever felt one room stay stuffy in summer, blocked soffits are a frequent culprit.
Ridge Vents (Exhaust)
A ridge vent runs along the peak of the roof, hidden under a course of cap shingles. The roofer cuts a continuous slot in the decking at the ridge and covers it with a low-profile vent that lets air out while keeping rain, snow, and insects from blowing in. Paired with continuous soffit intake, ridge venting is widely regarded as the most effective and even passive system available.
For our region, the snow detail matters. A quality ridge vent has an external baffle and a weather filter designed to resist wind-driven snow. Cheaper versions can let fine snow infiltrate during a blizzard. When we install roof replacement projects, we spec ridge vents rated for the wind and snow loads we actually see here, and we make sure intake is sized to match. A long ridge vent with starved soffits will not perform.
Gable, Box, and Off-Ridge Vents
Not every roof has a long, continuous ridge. Hip roofs, complex rooflines, and additions sometimes call for other exhaust options:
- Gable vents sit in the triangular wall at each end of the attic. They are common on older homes and work by cross-ventilation, but airflow can be uneven and they may short-circuit a ridge vent if both are used carelessly.
- Box vents (static vents) are the square hooded vents you see dotted across some roofs. They are simple and reliable but cover a limited area, so several are needed.
- Off-ridge vents are a low-profile static vent installed just below the ridge, useful where a true ridge vent will not fit.
These can all work, but mixing exhaust types on one attic space can cause one vent to feed another instead of pulling from the soffits. A roofer should design the exhaust as a single coordinated system, not a collection of whatever fits.
Powered and Solar Vents: Use With Care
Powered attic fans and solar-powered vents move a lot of air, and they look like an easy upgrade. They have a real downside, though. If intake is inadequate, a powered fan will pull conditioned air out of your house through ceiling gaps and recessed lights, raising your heating and cooling costs and sometimes drawing moisture up into the attic.
Powered ventilation can make sense in specific situations, but for the large majority of Inland Northwest homes a well-balanced passive system of soffit intake plus ridge exhaust outperforms a fan, costs nothing to run, and has nothing to break. If someone recommends a powered fan, ask first whether your intake is even adequate to feed it.
Balance, Sizing, and Metal Roofs
The industry rule of thumb is the 1/300 rule: roughly one square foot of net free vent area for every 300 square feet of attic floor when intake and exhaust are balanced, split about evenly between the two. Building codes often reference this, and many situations call for closer to 1/150. The exact math depends on your attic size, roof pitch, and whether you have a vapor barrier, which is why an on-site look beats a guess.
Ventilation also interacts with your roofing material. Metal roofing, increasingly popular in snow country for its shedding ability and longevity, still needs proper intake and exhaust beneath it, often handled with ridge venting designed for the panel profile. The principle never changes: balanced airflow, low in and high out.
If you are unsure whether your attic breathes the way it should, the warning signs are worth watching for: ice dams every winter, a hot upstairs in summer, frost or moisture on the underside of the roof deck, or a musty attic smell.
Getting It Right on Your Home
Ventilation is one of those details that is invisible when it works and expensive when it does not. A roof can be installed with premium shingles and still fail early if the attic underneath is starved of airflow. That is also why ventilation is a standard part of a quality installation rather than an add-on.
