On new and replacement roofs, drip edge is required by most current building codes and by GAF installation standards. Many older homes in the Spokane area were built without it, which is why edge rot is so common on aging roofs.

In some limited cases it can be retrofitted, but because drip edge must be woven into the underlayment and the first row of shingles to function correctly, it is best installed during a roof replacement. A proper inspection will tell you what your roof needs.

Gutters collect and carry water away from your foundation, while drip edge controls water at the very edge of the roof and directs it into the gutter. They work together: without drip edge, water can slip behind the gutter and rot the fascia it is attached to.
