How a Gable Roof Is Built
A gable roof uses two pitched planes that lean against each other and join at a horizontal peak called the ridge. Where each plane stops at the end of the house, the exterior wall rises into a triangle, and that triangular section is the gable the roof is named for.
Gable roofs are common across Spokane and North Idaho because they are simple to frame, cost-effective, and shed water and snow efficiently. Variations include the front gable (the peak faces the street), the cross gable (two gable sections intersect over an L-shaped home), and the side gable (the most common layout on rectangular houses).
Why Gable Roofs Work Well in Inland Northwest Snow
The steep, straight slopes of a gable roof are a real advantage in our heavy-snow climate. A well-pitched gable lets snow slide off rather than accumulate, which reduces the dead-load weight pressing on the structure during a long Inland Northwest winter.
Steeper pitches also help limit the conditions that cause ice dams. When snow melts slowly on a low or complicated roof, the runoff can refreeze at the cold eaves and back water up under the shingles. A clean gable slope, combined with proper attic insulation and ventilation, keeps the roof deck temperature more even and helps meltwater drain off the edge instead of pooling behind a ridge of ice.
The Weak Point: Wind on the Gable End
The same shape that sheds snow so well has one vulnerability: the flat, vertical gable wall acts like a sail in high wind. When gusts hit a gable end straight on, they create uplift and pressure that can damage the roof framing or peel back roofing along the edge if the structure was not braced and detailed correctly.
In wind- and storm-prone parts of the region, this is managed with gable-end bracing, properly installed rake and ridge details, and quality fasteners. These are exactly the kinds of details that matter most during a roof replacement, when the underlying framing and edge connections are accessible and can be reinforced.

- Keep gutters and downspouts clear so meltwater drains away from the eaves and does not feed ice dams.
- Inspect the rake edges and ridge after major wind or hail events for lifted or missing material.

- Watch the gable-end walls and trim for signs of moisture, separation, or wind damage.
