Where Hip & Ridge Caps Go on Your Roof
Every sloped roof has lines where two surfaces come together. The ridge is the horizontal line at the very top where two slopes meet; a hip is the angled line running down from the ridge to a corner where two slopes meet at an outside angle.
Hip and ridge caps are pre-formed or field-cut shingles bent over these lines to cover the gap where field shingles end. Without them, the exposed shingle edges and any ridge ventilation would be wide open to wind-driven rain and snow.
Why Hip & Ridge Caps Matter in the Inland Northwest
The peaks and hips of a roof take the worst of Spokane and North Idaho weather. These lines are the highest, most wind-exposed points on the structure, and they sit directly in the path of the seasonal snow that builds and slides on Inland Northwest roofs.
- Wind uplift: Ridges catch the strongest gusts. Properly nailed and sealed caps resist the uplift that can peel back lesser-quality caps.
- Snow and freeze-thaw: Snow accumulates against ridges and hips, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles work moisture into any unsealed seam.
- Ridge ventilation: When a roof uses a ridge vent, the cap shingles cover and protect that vent opening so it can exhaust attic heat without letting weather in, which helps reduce the warm spots that lead to ice dams.

Some roofers save money by cutting three-tab field shingles into thirds and bending them over the ridge. In a cold climate, this is a weak point: standard shingles are not designed to flex over a sharp angle and can crack in freezing temperatures, especially after years of snow load.

- Caps that have lifted or shifted after a windstorm
- Exposed nail heads or gaps along the ridge line
- Granule loss or daylight visible at the ridge from inside the attic
