How a Hip Roof Is Built
On a hip roof, every exterior wall is topped by a sloping plane of roofing instead of a tall triangular gable end. Where two of those slopes meet at the outside corners, they form a diagonal line called a hip; where slopes meet at an inside corner (common on L-shaped homes), they form a valley. A simple square home produces a pyramid hip with a single peak, while a rectangular home produces a ridge line with hips running down to each corner.
Because all four sides pitch toward the eaves, a hip roof typically has more rafters, hip rafters, and seams than a basic gable roof. That makes it a little more complex to frame and flash correctly, but it also gives the structure a self-bracing shape that holds up well under load.
Why Hip Roofs Matter in the Inland Northwest Climate
Around Spokane and North Idaho, roofs take a beating from heavy snow, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, wind, and hail. A hip roof has real advantages in this climate:
- Wind resistance: With no large flat gable wall for gusts to push against, hip roofs handle wind and wind-driven snow better than gable designs.
- Even snow shedding: All four slopes carry snow load and drain meltwater outward, instead of concentrating runoff at two ends.
- Eave protection: The slopes wrap the whole house, giving overhangs on every side that help keep walls, windows, and foundations drier.
The tradeoff is that hips and valleys create extra seams where water and ice can intrude. Proper underlayment, ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, and careful flashing are essential to prevent ice dams and leaks during our long, cold winters.
Maintenance and Replacement Considerations
The same hips and valleys that make this roof strong are also its most vulnerable points. Freeze-thaw movement, granule loss from hail, and trapped debris in valleys can all open up leak paths over time. Homeowners should watch for lifted or cracked shingles along the hip lines, worn valley metal, and any staining on interior ceilings after a thaw.
When a hip roof reaches the end of its life, a quality roof replacement should include fresh ice-and-water protection in the valleys and along the eaves, properly sized hip and ridge caps, and balanced attic ventilation to limit the warm-roof conditions that cause ice dams.
