How an Ice Dam Forms
Ice dams are driven by an uneven roof surface temperature, not just cold weather. The process usually unfolds like this:
- Heat escaping from the living space below warms the upper part of the roof deck.
- Snow on that warm upper area melts and the water runs down toward the eaves.
- At the overhang and gutters, where there is no warm space underneath, the roof stays below freezing and the water re-freezes.
- Over repeated cycles, a thick ridge of ice builds up and forms a dam that traps the next round of meltwater behind it.
Because the water sits in a pool behind the ice instead of draining, it has time to work its way up under the shingles.
Why Ice Dams Matter in the Spokane and Inland Northwest Climate
Our region gives ice dams nearly ideal conditions. Spokane and North Idaho see heavy, persistent snowpack that lingers on roofs for weeks, plus repeated freeze-thaw cycles where daytime sun melts snow and nighttime cold refreezes it. That daily melt-and-refreeze pattern is exactly what stacks ice along the eaves.
When meltwater backs up under the shingles, it can soak the roof deck, drip into the attic, stain ceilings, ruin insulation, and feed mold. Add the weight of the ice plus heavy snow load and you also risk damaged gutters, torn fascia, and dangerous falling ice. In our climate this is a yearly threat, not a rare event.
How to Prevent Ice Dams
The most reliable fix is keeping the entire roof surface a uniform, cold temperature so snow does not melt unevenly:
- Air seal the attic to stop warm indoor air from leaking up to the roof deck.
- Add attic insulation so heat stays in your living space instead of warming the roof.
- Ensure proper ventilation from soffit to ridge so cold outside air keeps the deck near outdoor temperature.
- Install an ice and water shield membrane along the eaves so any backed-up water cannot reach the deck. This self-adhering underlayment is a standard part of a quality roof replacement in snow country.
- Safely rake snow off the lower roof edge after big storms to reduce the meltwater supply.
Signs You May Have an Ice Dam
Watch for these warning signs during and after winter storms:
- Thick ridges of ice or large icicles hanging from the eaves and gutters.
- Water stains or peeling paint on ceilings and walls near exterior walls.
- Damp or matted attic insulation, or visible moisture on the underside of the roof deck.
- Icicles forming behind the gutters or between the gutter and the home.
If you see interior water during a thaw, act quickly to limit damage and have the roof evaluated once it is safe.
