A ridge is the horizontal peak where two roof planes meet at the top of the roof. A hip is the sloped, angled edge where two roof planes meet on an external corner, running downward rather than across the top.

Most sloped roofs benefit from a ridge vent because it lets hot, moist attic air escape and works together with soffit vents to balance airflow. In our snowy Inland Northwest climate, good ridge ventilation also helps reduce moisture buildup and ice dams.

Look for cap shingles that are curling, cracked, lifted at the edges, or missing entirely, and check the attic for drafts or daylight along the peak. If you see these signs, contact DG Contracting for a free estimate before water finds its way in.
