Where the Ridge Sits on Your Roof
The ridge runs along the uppermost edge of a pitched roof, where the two sloping sides come together at the top. It is the opposite of the eave, which sits at the lowest edge. The ridge is supported underneath by a structural ridge board or ridge beam, and on the surface it is covered by special ridge cap shingles that are bent to fit over the peak.
Because the ridge is the highest and most exposed part of the roof, it takes the brunt of wind and weather, which is why it is one of the first areas a quality installer inspects for wear.
Why the Ridge Matters for Ventilation
The ridge is the natural exit point for hot, moist air that rises inside an attic. A ridge vent is a continuous opening cut along the peak and covered with the ridge cap, allowing stale air to escape while fresh air enters through soffit vents at the eaves. This balanced airflow does several important things:
- Removes summer heat that can bake shingles from below
- Releases winter moisture that would otherwise condense and rot the decking
- Helps keep attic temperatures even, which reduces the conditions that cause ice dams
A properly vented ridge is one of the most effective and least visible upgrades you can make to a roof.
The Ridge in the Spokane and Inland NW Climate
In the Inland Northwest, the ridge works hard year round. Heavy winter snow loads concentrate weight near the peak, and the freeze-thaw cycles common across Spokane and North Idaho can lift or crack poorly fastened ridge caps over time. When warm attic air leaks out at the ridge and melts the snow above, that meltwater can refreeze lower down and form ice dams along the eaves.
Wind is another factor. Gusts hitting the ridge can pry up loose cap shingles and drive rain or snow underneath. That is why correct ridge cap installation, proper underlayment, and balanced ridge ventilation are critical for a roof that lasts through our seasons. If your ridge caps are curling, cracked, or missing, it is often a sign the rest of the roof deserves a closer look during a roof replacement evaluation.
Signs Your Ridge Needs Attention
Homeowners can often spot ridge problems from the ground or during an interior attic check. Watch for:
- Ridge cap shingles that are lifted, cracked, curling, or blown off
- Daylight or drafts visible at the ridge line from inside the attic
- A musty smell or frost on the underside of the decking, hinting at poor ridge ventilation
- A visibly sagging or uneven ridge line, which can point to structural concerns
If you notice any of these, it is worth having the ridge inspected before a small issue lets water into the home.
