How a Roofing Membrane Works
Unlike steep-slope shingle roofs that shed water by gravity, low-slope and flat roofs hold water long enough that it can find any gap. A roofing membrane solves this by covering the deck with large rolled or torch-applied sheets that are seamed together into one watertight surface.
- TPO and PVC single-ply sheets are heat-welded at the seams for a fused, leak-resistant bond.
- EPDM is a durable rubber sheet bonded with adhesive or seam tape.
- Modified bitumen uses asphalt-based rolls fused with heat or cold adhesive.
The result is a barrier with very few vulnerable joints, which is exactly what a flat or gently sloped section of roof needs to stay dry.
Why Membranes Matter in the Spokane / Inland NW Climate
Our region's weather is hard on flat and low-slope roofs. Heavy snow loads sit for weeks, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles push meltwater into any opening. A continuous membrane resists this far better than seamed or patched materials.
- Ice dams form when snowmelt refreezes at roof edges; a fully sealed membrane prevents the backed-up water from seeping through.
- Standing snowmelt on flat sections has no shingle laps to exploit when the surface is one welded sheet.
- Wind and hail off the Palouse and surrounding hills are resisted by membranes that are mechanically fastened or fully adhered to the deck.
Where Membranes Are Used on a Home
Most Inland Northwest homes have steep pitched roofs with shingles, but membranes show up wherever the slope is too low for shingles to drain reliably:
- Flat or low-slope additions, porches, and dormers
- Garages and shop roofs
- Sections behind chimneys or between rooflines where water can pool

Signs a Membrane Needs Attention
Membranes are durable but not permanent, and our temperature swings stress them over time. Watch for:
- Open or lifting seams where two sheets meet
- Blisters, bubbles, or ponding water that lingers days after a thaw
- Cracking or shrinkage that pulls the membrane away from edges and flashings
- Interior stains below a flat section after snowmelt
Catching these early is far cheaper than repairing water-damaged decking and insulation underneath.
