How a Standing Seam Roof Is Built
A standing seam roof is formed from long metal panels that run vertically from the ridge down to the eave. Where two panels meet, their edges are folded or mechanically crimped together to form a raised vertical rib, or seam, that stands up off the deck. This is where the name comes from.
The key feature is that the panels are held down by hidden clips and fasteners tucked beneath the seam, so no screws or nails penetrate the exposed face of the metal. Compared with older exposed-fastener metal panels, this concealed system means there are far fewer points where water can ever find its way in.
Why Standing Seam Performs Well in the Inland Northwest
The Spokane and North Idaho climate is hard on roofs: deep snow loads, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, ice dams along the eaves, and gusty wind. Standing seam handles these conditions for several reasons:
- Snow sheds easily. The smooth metal surface and raised seams let heavy snow slide off rather than building up and overloading the structure.
- Fewer leak points. Because fasteners are concealed, there are no exposed screw heads to back out, crack their rubber washers in the cold, or leak as the roof expands and contracts.
- Movement is built in. The clip system lets the metal expand and contract through our wide temperature swings without buckling or loosening.
- Ice dam resistance. The continuous, smooth panels give meltwater fewer seams and laps to back up into during a freeze-thaw cycle.
Standing Seam vs. Exposed-Fastener Metal
Not all metal roofs are the same. Exposed-fastener panels (often called corrugated or ag-panel) are screwed directly through the face of the metal. They cost less, but those screws and their rubber washers are exposed to sun, snow, and freeze-thaw, and they typically need re-tightening or replacement over the years.
Standing seam hides its fasteners and uses interlocking seams instead, which generally means a longer service life and a cleaner, more modern look. The trade-off is a higher upfront cost and more specialized installation.
