Why metal makes sense up here
Snow doesn't sit on a properly pitched metal roof the way it clings to asphalt. The slick, continuous surface lets accumulation slide before it can build into the kind of dead weight that stresses framing and feeds ice dams. In Bonner County deep-snow country, where a single storm cycle can drop more than a foot overnight, that shedding behavior is the whole point.
A well-installed metal roof also outlives almost everything else on the house. Expect 50 years or more out of a standing-seam system, compared with the 20 or so you'd get from shingles fighting the same freeze-thaw punishment.
Standing seam vs. exposed-fastener panels
Two systems dominate residential metal here, and they behave differently in snow:
- Standing seam hides its fasteners under raised, interlocked seams. Nothing penetrates the weather plane, so there's no fastener to back out under repeated thermal cycling - the ideal choice for primary residences and steep mountain-facing pitches.
- Exposed-fastener (corrugated/ribbed) panels screw directly through the metal. They cost less and suit shops, barns, and outbuildings, but the rubber washers need periodic attention in a climate that swings hard between hot summers and sub-zero nights.

Homes climbing toward Schweitzer Mountain face heavier snowfall and stronger wind than the lakeshore, and the install has to respect that. We detail eaves and valleys for high-volume runoff, set fasteners and clips to the manufacturer's wind-load spec, and plan where snow will actually slide so it doesn't avalanche onto a walkway, a gas meter, or the truck in the driveway.
Snow retention isn't an afterthought either. Where controlled shedding matters, we add snow guards or rail systems so the load releases gradually instead of all at once.
Stopping ice dams before they start
Ice dams form when heat escaping the attic melts the underside of the snowpack, then that meltwater refreezes at the cold eave. Metal helps, but the roof assembly underneath does the heavy lifting. We install a continuous waterproof underlayment, carry self-adhered ice-and-water membrane well past the warm wall line, and check that attic ventilation keeps the deck cold. Get those layers right and the dam never gets a foothold.
