We treat a roof as one connected system: the sheathing, the ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, a synthetic underlayment across the field, balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, properly spaced fasteners, and the shingles on top. Skip any one of those and the others have to work harder.
On a new install we check that the deck is sound and fastened to code, that the framing gives shingles a clean plane to lay on, and that the attic can breathe. Getting it right the first time is far cheaper than chasing problems after the first winter.
Built for open wind exposure along Hwy 195
Properties on the rolling ground near Hwy 195 rarely have a tree line or a neighbor's house to break the wind. That open wind exposure is the single biggest factor we design around in Rosalia. Wind lifts shingle tabs, drives rain sideways under the edges, and finds any seam that was not sealed.
We answer that with starter strip along every eave and rake, hand-sealing where the pitch or layout calls for it, and shingles rated for high wind speeds. The drip edge and rake metal get fastened tight so the perimeter - the place wind attacks first - holds firm.
Ventilation and ice protection for Palouse winters
The Inland Northwest hands Rosalia heavy snow loads, hard freeze-thaw cycles, and the ice dams that form when warm attic air melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave. A roof that is not vented correctly traps heat and moisture, and that is where rot and ice dams begin.
Every installation we do balances soffit intake with ridge or roof-line exhaust so the attic stays cold and dry. We run ice-and-water membrane up from the eaves past the heated wall line and through the valleys, the two spots where meltwater backs up first.
