Why low-slope roofs behave differently here
Steep shingle roofs let snow and meltwater run off fast. A flat or low-slope section does not have that luxury - water sits, snow piles up, and every seam becomes a potential entry point. Around Cocolalla Lake on Hwy 95 in Bonner County, that combination of long winters and slow drainage is why so many porch additions, dormers, and modern flat-roofed builds eventually leak at the field or the edges.
The fix is not more shingles - it is a continuous waterproof membrane with the right slope built underneath it. TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) gives you a single welded sheet across the whole surface, so there are no overlapping courses for water to creep under as it ponds.
What TPO does well on Idaho homes
TPO is a heat-welded membrane, which means the seams are fused into one piece rather than glued. That matters in a freeze-thaw climate where adhesives fatigue and joints work loose over the years. A welded seam stays welded.

Slope, drainage, and snow load come first

The membrane is only one layer; the insulation, fasteners, and edge metal underneath all have to carry the weight of a wet spring snowpack without deflecting.
