Why metal makes sense up here
Snow doesn't sit on a metal roof the way it clings to asphalt. The smooth, hard surface lets accumulation slide and shed as temperatures rise, which keeps weight off your structure and discourages the ice dams that form when snowmelt refreezes at a cold eave. For homes tucked into the slopes around Mica, where a roof can carry a heavy load for weeks at a stretch, that shedding behavior is the whole point.

Standing seam uses concealed fasteners and raised, interlocking seams that run from ridge to eave. With no exposed screw heads to back out or leak over time, it's the gold standard for steep, snow-heavy roofs in the foothills.
Metal shingles and stone-coated steel mimic the look of architectural shingles or shake while delivering metal's durability, a good fit if you want a more traditional appearance for a home with tree cover and neighbors close by.
Snow retention and gutters done right
Shedding snow is good until a slab releases over a doorway, a walkway, or a propane tank. On Mica homes we plan snow retention deliberately, adding rail or pad-style snow guards above entries and high-traffic zones so the roof releases snow where it's safe to land.
