Why a stock 5-inch gutter is the wrong starting point out here
Builders default to a 5-inch K-style gutter with 2x3 downspouts because that is what comes off the truck. On a low-snow lot that is fine. On the remote forested rural homes scattered across the plateau near Wellpinit, it is undersized from day one. A spring thaw or a chinook-driven warmup can release the equivalent of weeks of rain off a steep roof in a single afternoon, and a 5-inch trough cannot carry that flow rate.
When the water exceeds the gutter's capacity it sheets over the front lip, freezes on the eave overnight, and starts the cycle of buildup that pries fascia loose and rots soffit from behind. The gutter looks intact. The damage is happening where you cannot see it.

How we size for snowmelt, not just rainfall
Sizing a gutter system properly comes down to three numbers working together:
- Trough capacity: We frequently move Wellpinit homes up to 6-inch gutters, which carry roughly 40 percent more water than the standard 5-inch and resist the over-the-lip freeze that starts ice damage.
- Downspout size and count: A bigger trough does nothing if the water cannot exit fast enough. We use 3x4 downspouts and add outlets so no single run is asked to drain more roof than it can clear during peak melt.
- Slope and outlet placement: On the long eaves common to rural builds, we set the pitch and position the drops so meltwater keeps moving toward the ground instead of pooling and refreezing mid-run.
The goal is a system that empties faster than the roof can fill it, even on the warmest February afternoon.
Soffit and fascia: the parts snowmelt destroys first
Fascia is the board your gutter hangs from. Soffit is the underside panel that ventilates the attic. When an undersized gutter overflows and refreezes, that ice load works directly on the fascia, loosening fasteners and opening seams. Water then wicks behind the soffit, and on a deep-eaved home set back in the timber, that rot can spread for a full season before anyone notices a sagging panel.
We replace damaged fascia with sealed, pre-finished or paint-grade board, and pair it with vented soffit that keeps the attic cold and even. A cold, evenly vented soffit means less melt-and-refreeze at the eave in the first place, so the new gutters are not fighting the roof above them.
