What an Ice Dam Actually Is
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that builds up along the lower edge of a roof, usually right above the eaves and gutters. Once that ridge forms, it traps melting snow behind it. The water has nowhere to drain, so it pools, backs up under the shingles, and works its way into the roof deck and attic.
Here in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Coeur d'Alene and across North Idaho, ice dams are one of the most common cold-weather problems we see. Our winters deliver exactly the conditions that create them: deep snow loads that sit on the roof for weeks, plus repeated freeze-thaw swings that melt and refreeze the same snowpack over and over.
The frustrating part is that an ice dam isn't really a roofing-material problem. It's a heat-and-ventilation problem that shows up as a roofing problem. Understanding that distinction is the key to stopping them.
Why Ice Dams Form: The Heat Cycle
Every ice dam comes down to one thing: the top of your roof is warmer than the bottom. Here's the cycle:
- Heat escapes into the attic. Warm air from your living space rises into the attic through gaps, recessed lights, ductwork, and thin insulation.
- The upper roof warms and melts snow. That trapped heat raises the temperature of the roof deck above freezing, even when it's well below freezing outside.
- Meltwater runs down to the cold eaves. The overhangs and gutters hang out past the heated part of the house, so they stay at outdoor temperature.
- The water refreezes at the edge. When the runoff hits that cold zone, it freezes solid. Repeat this for a few days and the ridge of ice grows tall enough to pond water behind it.
This is why two identical houses on the same street can have wildly different ice-dam problems. The one with air leaks and weak attic insulation feeds the cycle; the one with a tight, well-ventilated attic stays cold-roofed and sheds snow evenly.
The Damage Ice Dams Cause
Homeowners often shrug off icicles as a picturesque winter detail. But large icicles and a thick ice ridge at the eaves are a warning sign that water is backing up where it shouldn't.
Left alone, ice dams can lead to:
- Roof leaks and rotted decking as backed-up water seeps under shingles and soaks the plywood.
- Stained or sagging ceilings and peeling paint on interior walls.
- Soaked, compressed insulation that loses its R-value, which ironically makes future ice dams worse.
- Mold and mildew in the attic and wall cavities.
- Damaged gutters and fascia pulled loose by the sheer weight of the ice.
Because the water travels before it shows up, the stain on your living room ceiling is often nowhere near the actual entry point. By the time you see it indoors, the deck has usually been wet for a while.
Long-Term Prevention: Fix the Attic First
The only permanent way to stop ice dams is to keep the entire roof surface cold and uniform in temperature. That means working on the attic, not just the roof. Three things do the heavy lifting:
- Air sealing. Seal the leaks where warm household air sneaks into the attic: around can lights, the attic hatch, plumbing stacks, top plates and chimney chases. This is usually the single highest-impact fix.
- Insulation. Bring attic insulation up to a healthy depth so heat from below can't reach the deck. In our climate, an attic floor that feels skimpy almost always is.
- Ventilation. A balanced intake-and-exhaust system, soffit vents feeding air up to ridge or roof vents, flushes out any warmth that does get through and keeps the deck at outdoor temperature.
When these three work together, snow melts evenly and drains instead of refreezing at the edge. A quality roof system is designed around this balance, which is why ventilation and underlayment matter as much as the shingles themselves.
Roof-Side Defenses That Help

What to Do During a Storm (and What Not to Do)
If an ice dam has already formed mid-winter, the goal is to relieve it safely without wrecking the roof. A few guidelines:
- Do use a roof rake to pull snow off the lower three to four feet of roof from the ground. Less snow at the eaves means less fuel for the dam. Stand clear of sliding loads.
- Don't chip at the ice with hatchets, hammers or shovels. You'll gouge shingles and create the very leaks you're trying to prevent.
- Don't pour hot water or salt haphazardly. It's a short-lived fix and can stain siding or damage plantings below.
- Don't climb onto an icy roof. It is not worth the fall. If water is actively coming inside, a calcium-chloride product placed in a fabric sleeve across the dam can melt a drainage channel as a stopgap.
These are temporary measures. They buy time, but they don't fix the heat cycle causing the problem. Plan to address the attic and roof details once the weather breaks.
When to Call a Professional
If you're seeing repeat ice dams every winter, water stains on the ceiling, or thick ice ridges and oversized icicles year after year, it's time for a professional look. Recurring dams almost always point to an air-sealing, insulation or ventilation shortfall that DIY snow removal can't solve.
