What Are Granules and Why Do Shingles Have Them?
Take a close look at an asphalt shingle and you'll see it's coated in thousands of tiny mineral particles. Those are granules, usually crushed rock or ceramic-coated minerals fused to the asphalt surface during manufacturing. They aren't decoration. They're the shingle's first line of defense.
Granules do three big jobs. First, they block ultraviolet light, which slowly bakes and breaks down the asphalt underneath. Second, they add fire resistance. Third, they give the shingle weight and a textured surface that helps it shed water and resist wind. The color of your roof comes from these granules too.
When granules wear away, the black asphalt mat below gets exposed to sun and weather. From that point, the shingle ages faster. So a little granule loss is cosmetic, but ongoing or heavy loss is a sign the protective layer is thinning where you need it most.
Some Granule Loss Is Completely Normal
Before you panic over grit in your gutters, know this: every asphalt roof sheds granules. It's normal, and it happens in a few predictable phases.
- Brand-new roofs: Freshly installed shingles carry loose granules left over from manufacturing and handling. You'll often see a noticeable amount wash into gutters in the first rain or two. This is harmless.
- Steady, light shedding: Throughout a roof's middle years, a small, gradual trickle of granules is expected as the surface weathers. A teaspoon here and there is not a problem.
- End-of-life shedding: As shingles approach the end of their service life, granule loss accelerates and bald spots appear. This is the roof telling you its clock is running out.
The key isn't whether you find granules. It's how many, how fast, and where. Context is everything.
When Granule Loss Is a Red Flag
Here's when that grit deserves real attention. Watch for these warning signs:
- Bald or shiny patches: If you can see smooth, dark asphalt showing through, the protective layer is gone in that spot and UV damage is underway.
- Heavy granule buildup at downspouts: A cup or more of granules collecting at the bottom of a downspout, especially on an older roof, suggests widespread shedding.
- Uneven coloring or dark streaks: Patches that look darker than the surrounding roof are often areas where granules have washed off.
- Granules after a hailstorm: A sudden surge of granule loss right after hail usually means impact damage knocked them loose and bruised the mat underneath.
- Curling, cracking, or brittle shingles: When granule loss shows up alongside these, the roof is aging out, not just weathering.
A single bald spot near a vent might just need a repair. Widespread loss across the whole roof points toward roof replacement.
Why Inland Northwest Weather Speeds It Up
Spokane, Spokane Valley, Coeur d'Alene, and the rest of North Idaho put roofs through a punishing annual cycle, and several of those stresses attack granules directly.
Freeze-thaw cycling. Our winters swing repeatedly above and below freezing. Moisture works into tiny gaps in the shingle surface, freezes, expands, and pries granules loose. Do that hundreds of times a season and the wear adds up.
Ice dams and standing snow. Heavy snow loads and ice dams at the eaves keep shingles wet and cold for long stretches, accelerating surface breakdown and granule release once things finally melt.
Intense summer sun. Hot, dry Inland Northwest summers and big day-to-night temperature swings bake the asphalt and make the binding between granules and shingle more brittle.
Wind and hail. Storm-driven wind scours exposed slopes, and even modest hail can strip granules and bruise the mat. South- and west-facing slopes usually weather fastest here because they take the most sun and storm exposure.
How to Check Your Roof Safely
You can learn a lot without ever climbing a ladder. Start from the ground and your gutters.
- Clean out your gutters and downspouts in spring and fall, and note how much granular grit comes out. Tracking it year over year tells you whether shedding is speeding up.
- Use binoculars from the ground to scan for bald patches, dark streaks, lifted or missing shingles, and uneven coloring.
- Check after major storms, especially hail or high wind. A sudden spike in granules in the gutters is worth a closer look.
- Look at the age. If your roof is past 15 to 20 years and you're seeing heavy shedding, the two together matter more than either alone.
Please don't walk a steep, snowy, or wet roof yourself. Inland Northwest roofs are slick and dangerous much of the year, and a fall isn't worth it. When you want a real assessment, a professional inspection is the safe move.
What to Do About It
Your response depends on what the granule loss is telling you.
If it's normal aging: Keep gutters clean, keep an eye on the trend, and schedule periodic inspections. There's nothing to fix yet.
If it's localized: A few bald spots near a vent, valley, or a wind-damaged section can often be repaired without replacing the whole roof. Catching it early prevents leaks and rot in the decking below.
If it's widespread or storm-related: When granule loss covers large areas or follows a hailstorm, it's time for a professional evaluation. Storm damage may also be covered by your homeowner's insurance, and an experienced contractor can help you document it.
If replacement is the right call, it can be a chance to upgrade. Architectural asphalt shingles hold granules better than older three-tab products, and metal roofing sidesteps the granule issue entirely while standing up beautifully to snow and ice.
