That visibility is exactly why shingle style matters more in Ford than it does on a tight city lot. A laminated architectural shingle reads with depth and shadow line, mimicking the dimension of wood shake without the maintenance, and it ages far more evenly than the flat, fast-fading three-tab that builders once defaulted to.
Value follows the same logic. Architectural shingles carry thicker mats and longer manufacturer coverage, so the small premium over basic shingles buys a roof that holds its color and its seal through more freeze-thaw cycles. On a property you intend to keep, that is the cheaper roof over twenty years, not the more expensive one.

Ford's elevation and exposure mean real snow load, then the slow grind of freeze-thaw as daytime sun melts the pack and overnight cold refreezes it at the eaves. Two failure points decide whether a shingle roof survives that cycle: the seal strip and the edges.
- Ice-dam defense - self-adhered ice-and-water membrane along eaves and in every valley, so meltwater backing up under the shingles meets a waterproof layer instead of bare deck.
- Wind and uplift - shingles rated for high wind, hand-sealed where open ridgelines and field edges catch gusts.
- Balanced ventilation - intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge to keep the deck cold and even, which is what actually stops ice dams from forming in the first place.
