An asphalt shingle is not a solid slab. It is a mat saturated with petroleum-based asphalt, and that asphalt is what keeps the shingle pliable enough to flex with temperature swings without cracking. Over the years the lighter oils inside that asphalt slowly migrate out and oxidize. The shingle does not fail all at once. It simply gets stiffer, more brittle, and less able to hold its protective granules.
