Steep shingle roofs shed water in seconds. A flat or low-slope deck holds it, which changes everything about how the assembly has to be built. The membrane becomes a continuous waterproof skin rather than a series of overlapping shingles, and the structure underneath - decking, insulation, drains - has to move water off a surface that wants to keep it.
That's why we start every flat-roof project by reading the structure itself: where the deck wants to pond, how the insulation is tapered, whether the drains and scuppers are sized for a fast thaw. The membrane brand matters, but a perfectly welded sheet over a dead-flat, poorly drained deck will still fail early. Get the structure right and the membrane can do its job for decades.
TPO: a single-ply skin built for this climate

Every install includes proper slope to the drains, oversized or screened outlets so needles and cones can't choke the flow, tapered insulation to break up dead-flat areas, and fully welded boots and flashings at every vent, curb, and wall transition. Where a low-slope section ties into a pitched roof - common on homes near the water - we detail the junction so the two systems shed into each other instead of trapping water between them.
Snow load, ice dams, and the thaw cycle
Heavy valley and lake-effect snow can sit on a flat roof for weeks here on the east edge of the valley near the Idaho line.
